Best of the Northern Suburbs

  1. Kramerville

A few years ago, Kramerville was comprised solely of fabric and furniture stores and felt very industrial. A recent revisit brought to light what a far cry it is to its former self. Ok, maybe not THAT different because a number of the original stores remain but a new look has been introduced based on the premise of a safe, clean, almost cordoned off area in Sandton. Coffee shops and restaurants have been added to many design stores, making them friendly and inviting. I adore Katy’s palace bar which prides itself on its likeness to a palace (I would say more of an upmarket loft) in décor and feel. It’s perfect for cocktail parties, corporate events and sit-down dinners. I love that they leave the choice of décor up to you when you book. You can select from various designers; themes such as white wedding, sunset terrace, African banquet and others. They even have their Royal Tuk Tuk at your service to cart your guests around the area.

  1. Wild Eye

In Fourways, is perfect for all the creatives out there. They offer photographic courses with practical experience. Choose from a few topics and locations such as a day trip to the Kruger park to photograph wildlife. Once you’re a learned photographer, you can then select one of their photographic safaris or travel packages. There’s the option of guided tours where an experienced professional can assist your photography, or you are welcome to simply enjoy the beauty that is our wilderness

  1. Rosebank

The newly opened Bolton Road Collection is part of the facelift that Rosebank has undergone. A fresh new restaurant and cocktail bar kitted with screed flooring, unusual lighting designs and exposed brick walls – you’d expect it to feel cold and stark but their furnishings, incredible food and warm atmosphere make it the perfect end of week stop.

If you’re in a shopping mood, then head up to Rosebank mall which has introduced a variety of upmarket stores and restaurants. There are holiday workshops for kids and expos for adults too. They’ve also brought back their Sunday rooftop market, infamous for their eclectic mix of food, books, antiques and African crafts. An added bonus is the car boot sale that joins the market on the last Sunday of every month. Their wares range from old school toys, to records and trinkets from days gone by.

  1. Cocktails and canvas

In Rivonia gives the unique service of painting paired with cocktails. That’s right, let your creative juices flow with some alcoholic lubrication. Great for corporate events, private parties and their monthly open night for anyone to join. It’s great for meeting people, relaxing and creating. A teacher guides you through a chosen art piece and the package includes your canvas, a cocktail upon arrival and loads of fun. No under 18’s and drinks can be purchased from the restaurant. Their sessions run morning, afternoon and evening so there’s no excuse not to go!
