      Mother Superior

      May 14, 2018

With Mother’s Day just having past, I wanted to take a moment to talk about my mom in particular.

She is a really weird, short and loud lady who has just as many freckles as I do (if not more) and the strangest sense of humor that not everyone gets. Needless to say, I inherited all of these things from her.

My mom is incredibly loving and last week, as she sat with me for three hours at the clinic whilst waiting for my medication, not complaining once, it was when I really recognised that she is indeed my best friend.

In fact, I even told the ladies who were surprised to find out that we were mother and daughter, and they all responded with appreciative oohs and ahhs and smiles at the thought.

It is the honest through though.

My mom is always there for me, whenever I need her. She has always supported me, my decisions and dreams, even when it is not entirely clear where they are going to get me. My mom listens to my opinions and argues me when she thinks I am doing something that could be harmful to myself.

I count myself lucky on a daily basis to have such a strong and understanding woman on my team.

We also cry together at movies regularly.

She often stays over and we chill and watch movies together. A favourite pastime of ours is to deep dive into Facebook and look at what the kids I went to primary school with look like now. And the best part is that she cares too because she was there.

She remembers, she has always been a part of my life.

I know growing up wasn’t the easiest and I guess for some, life isn’t meant to be a cakewalk. Especially with my depression and suicide attempts, that couldn’t have been easy for her to deal with. I will never forget something that she said to me recently though that hit me right in the feels.

She was talking about how when she fell pregnant, my dad wasn’t too happy with the prospect and wanted her to take alternative measures, but she was adamant because she wanted me more than anything.

Without knowing who I was going to turn out to be, how incredibly close we would grow and what I would do with my life, she wanted me. My mom has always loved me, even when I don’t love myself. And there is something so incredibly powerful about that.

The decision to create and be responsible for an entire life with such passion and fervour, it is no wonder that I turned out the way I did (I’m talking about the good parts that is).

For this reason, I just wanted to take a moment to publicly thank the women who brought me into this world (and also threatened to take me out of it if I was being naughty) and who is largely responsible for all that I am today.

I am blessed beyond all measure to have an incredible woman like you mommy and one day I will convince you to get a matching tattoo with me...

      I love you every day.
